a Very SHINee XMAS Eve: Flame of Love, Dream Girl, + Married to the music

It’s holiday time again! The theme was “A Very SHINee Xmas” and the girls each picked a look from one of their music videos for their outfit inspiration! This year we hadn’t gotten a real chance to take a lot of pictures so I only did a re-shoot with Sephira’s Flame of Love outfit since I had zero good ones of her! I plan on doing some more of Azriella’s Dream Girl outfit at some point if she’s up for it!

The Story Behind the Outfit

Besides me and Jon, Sephira is such a massive fan of SHINee which makes it so much more fun to create inspired outfits for her! When she was just starting out stanning them, she first fell in love with the dramatic outfits Taemin would wear in his videos, especially the ones with long swaths of fabric! When it came down to it, she was torn between Taemin’s Sayonara Hitori outfit from the 2016 MAMA awards and his opening outfit from his Flame of Love music video! We decided to do a mix of both, adding in some pops of jewel-toned satins for the long strips. Since he isn’t wearing a shirt for either, I came up with the idea of testing out a pattern I have that’s still in its draft stage which is a slim, turtleneck dress.

The Process

I was nervous about making this because this was my first time (well, second but the first was a total fail!) making a suit jacket! Even though I like to sew lots of unisex looks for my girls, I’ve been extremely intimidated to attempt a blazer for any of them!
I used Melly Sews, Berkshire Blazer and edited it heavily which is a bit of a risk if you aren’t comfortable with the base pattern first.
I needed a notched collar for starters and this pattern has a shawl collar. To be honest, I don’t completely remember how I did this 😅, but I altered the collar to have a back piece separate from the rest of the jacket to get that notched look like Taemin’s.
Then, I had to change up the closures in the front to go button, strap, button, button; plus I sewed in shoulder pads (another first!).
I had to heavily alter the back (see top right pic just above this), because, upon close inspection, it has a yoke on top, and an open, split, and curved hem. His long strips are built into the yoke, but since I wanted to utilize my fabric in the most economic way, I decided to sew them into the yoke in two sets of two, with the insides facing fabrics made from the jewel-toned satins.
To add in more elements from the outfit on the right, I set in four sets of long, black and jewel-toned strips per sleeve into the underside of the sleeve seams.

I decided to deviate from the idea of pants on the bottom since the top was so much effort (and I still had to make the other two girls’ outfits), and I just made a long, skirt made of black strips faced in the jeweled satins, sewn down a few inches.

Since I had to make an underdress, I picked a knit fabric in a color that complimented the color scheme I already had going. I used a pattern I have in draft mode still: a turtleneck shirt/dress and I added really long strips on the underside of the sleeves so that they could be wrapped around her arms like ballet slippers, with long, flowing ends. To finish the look, I took a strip of black and added a snap on it to wrap around her neck and criss-cross in front (like a look from a different one of his videos: Press Your Number)

While we were taking these pictures, we had a little escapee who came to share in the fun of the photoshoot! I just love how sweet these two are together!!! Sephira is such a great big sister to Akira.

A collage of the outfits I made for Azy and Akira. For Azy’s, I used the same pattern as the dress above and went with one long sleeve as Taemin does often (even though it’s not exactly like his outfit for Dream Girl) and drafted a fitted box-pleated, color-blocked skirt.
Akira’s Jonghyun outfit from Married to the Music. I self-drafted the vest and welt, and I used the Friday Dress by Petit a Petit + Family and edited the sleeves to have faux cuffs. She’s demonstrating in the video, each of the members loses a facial feature 😅.

I hope you enjoyed more SHINee-inspired outfits! Expect more to be coming soon!!
